3-25-2021 - WA/WMA Press Release: EXCITING NEWS FOR MASTER'S CROSS COUNTRY

World Athletics and World Masters Athletics have reached a historic agreement that will see masters championships held for the first time alongside the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Bathurst, Australia, next year. The World Athletics Council approved the proposal last week while confirming the competition timetable. World Athletics, World Masters Athletics and the Bathurst Local Organising Committee will work together to organise the inaugural World Masters Cross Country Championships (short course) on the weekend of 19-20 February 2022.

"We have worked hard over the last few years to develop closer relationships with the various sectors of the global running community, including recreational running, mountain and trail running, and parkrun, because that makes our athletics community stronger, so I’m delighted to announce this new initiative in cooperation with World Masters Athletics," World Athletics president Sebastian Coe said. "We look forward to welcoming passionate runners of all ages and abilities to Bathurst next year for what promises to be a unique festival of cross country running."

World Masters Athletics president Margit Jungmann added: "We are excited to offer this new opportunity for masters athletes around the world to come together and celebrate their love of running and competition, and to join with the best cross country runners in the world to test themselves on the scenic Mt Panorama course at Bathurst in Australia. We are pleased to be working with World Athletics to make this a uniquely memorable event for all the masters athletes who attend."

Originally scheduled to take place in March 2021 before the Covid-19 pandemic led to its postponement, the World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst will now be held on 19 February 2022. The timetable is as follows:

14:35 U20 women’s 6km

15:15 U20 men’s 8km

16:25 mixed relay

17:05 senior women’s 10km

18:05 senior men’s 10km

The World Masters Cross Country Championships portion of the weekend of racing will include a Master mixed 4 x 2km relay, scheduled on Saturday, 19 February, and a series of Master age group races on Sunday, 20 February.

Personal Comments from Bill Quinlisk - There were no further details made available from World Athletics about the Masters portion of the championships. A lot of questions arise and the USATF Cross Country Council is involved in international discussions about the event.

Concerns include:

  • Will the Master's mixed 4x2k relay on Saturday be composed of Club teams, National teams or Regional teams or some combination?
  • Will Masters be defined as ages 35+ as per WMA LDR rules?
  • Will USATF fund our Master mixed 4x2k relay team or will runners travel at their own expense?
  • How will USATF select its Masters mixed relay team?
  • Will the Master short course individual 5-year age group races on Sunday be 4k, 5k, 6k, 8k or 10k?
  • Will the 5-year age group races include 3-person team scoring by country, by region or by club team or will these races just be for individual runners?

Stay tuned for updates as they occur.

January 1, 2021: New USATF Competition Rule that affects Masters Cross Country

New Rule 341.12 added as follows:

“In Masters Long Distance Running including Masters Cross Country, an athlete may not change affiliation prior to the Championships or be eligible to represent or score points for the club to which he/she seeks to change affiliation after the closing of online entries for Masters LDR and Master Cross Country Championships. If the athlete does not desire to compete for their original club, if any, then they may compete unattached, representing no club. Changing club affiliation prior to Master Championship online entry deadlines is the responsibility of the athlete.

For a primer on how to change your club affiliation see the USATF Governance Manual Regulation 4.C.2 at: https://www.usatf.org/governance/bylaws-regulations

Also, contact your local Association’s Membership Chair for help.

OLD RESULTS MAY STILL BE AVAILABLE

Not sure how long this will last but it is still possible to access old USATF national LDR results that were once posted on the USATF website. Rumor suggests that the new USATF web platform will no longer carry results from more than 3 years in the past. The 'old' USATF website carried results dating back to 2001 when Al Gore first invented the internets. Why did these old result links disappear? Well, maybe they are still there. There is a 'back door' to access these old results. It's not easy but it works - for now.

For example: if you go to the old webpage for the 2002 USATF national LDR Championships schedule at:

http://www.usatf.org/Events---Calendar/National-Championships.aspx?year=2002

You are told 'PAGE NOT FOUND'.

But, if you type the word 'legacy' at the beginning of the url then the old page magically appears.

Use: http://www.legacy.usatf.org/Events---Calendar/National-Championships.aspx?year=2002

Once you are in the old system and you try to navigate old links you may get these 'PAGE NOT FOUND' error messages. All you have to do is keep inserting the word 'legacy' at the beginning of each new url as shown in the example above.

Apparently the old pages still exist somewhere in the ethernets but unless you use the exact 'legacy' url there are no working links to these old pages.

Hurry if you want old national results because I am not sure how long this option will be available.

You're welcome - BQ.
